Massive earthquake hits Chile Tsunami is coming
Santiago locals are now on streets for their safety as the buildings sway due to an earthquake with 8.3 magnitude shakes Chile on 16 September 7:54PM local time and it was that strong that it was felt by Buenos Aires citizens living 970 miles away. The epicentre is said to be in 46km west of illapel. The Pacific Tsunami warning centre mentioned that "wide spread tsunami waves" will hit Chile and New zealand, & the waves have started to hit coast of Chile.
Chile has a long history of huge earthquakes, including 2010 Magnitude 8.8 earthquake in central Chile, which ruptured a 400 km long section of the plate boundary south of this 2015 event (and to the south of the Juan Fernandez Ridge, which enters the trench immediately south of the 2015 earthquake). This same zone also hosted the largest earthquake on record, the 1960 Magnitude 9.5 earthquake in southern Chile. Over the century prior to the September 16, 2015 earthquake, the region within 400 km of this event 5 and has hosted 15 other M 7+ earthquakes.
